In the past, single speed motors delivered air equally to all parts of the air handling branch, only on or off. However, now with VFD, the energy efficiency of buildings can be greatly improved by operating at the lowest required power to ensure comfort.
VFD in pump applications
The air flow rate can vary with the speed of the fan, and we will apply the exact same strategy to the variable speed pump. When the pump is running at full speed, excess pressure must be discharged through a pressure reducing recirculation valve. All excess traffic is wasted energy. By adjusting the pump speed, precise pressure and flow rate can be controlled, thereby saving energy.
